Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker

Reviewed Date: 17th July 2020

📍It is an undeniable fact that sleep is the most neglected aspect of the 21st century. Due to the sudden rise of technological innovations like smartphones and LED bulbs, most people are not obtaining sufficient sleep. Even politicians (Trump) and celebrities glorify the fact that they are sleep deprived. But we are utterly forgetting the dire consequences of sleep deprivation.

📍People who fail to sleep 7-9 hours are prone to get obese, they suffer from type 2 diabetes, and they have a 200% to 400% chance of getting a heart attack in their life. Not only these, but the more sleep-deprived we are, the more irrational we become, and it eventually leads to depression and suicidal thoughts. And, also, these individuals are also prone to get Alzheimer’s disease in their 50s.

📍So much valuable information I learned from this book. It became my favorite book in no less time. Thanks to the book community. I repeatedly saw this book in my feed and purchased it after reading good reviews. I’m so enthusiastic to read about sleep; often I neglected sleep and thought it was just a waste of time. But after reading the book, my perspective changed, and I gave utmost priority to sleep.

📍Sleep is the cheapest and most accessible commodity for humans, with lots of benefits for the brain and body. Sleep enhances the ability to learn, remember, and make rational decisions. Sleep regulates our appetite, helping control our body weight. To be a healthy individual, he/she should obtain 7-9 hours of sleep. Failing to obtain it will lead to dire consequences.

📍I really loved reading this book. This book gave me a new perspective on my sleep routine. During my first semester in college, I used to sleep less than 6 hours. Because of that sleep pattern, I got a migraine headache. As you have heard about migraine before, it’s more painful than you think. With migraine, you get limitations. You can’t stay outside for longer hours, you can’t hear at high volumes, and importantly, you overeat. My sincere advice is to get enough sleep to avoid Migraine headaches

➡️My takeaways from the book:

⚡Pulling an all-nighter is a stupid idea because we forget 40% of what we have learned by being awake at night. This happens because the hippocampus, where temporary memories are stored, blocks new learning.

⚡The more sleep-deprived we are, the less attention we pay to the task at hand. This is one of the reasons why we witness road accidents.

⚡Beauty sleep is real. After getting 7-9 hours of sleep, you look more attractive, healthier, and less fatigued.

⚡Don’t drink alcohol at night. Alcohol is in a class of drugs called sedatives. Alcohol fragments your sleep and suppresses REM sleep, which is important for consolidating your memories.
