The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande

Even with technological improvements and advancements and years of mastering the job, why do errors still persist in operation theaters? Why are doctors who are considered as lifesavers taking away the lives of patients? What could be the reason?

The reason is overlooking a few crucial steps in the process of surgeries and medical operations. As the author mentioned in the book, half of deaths can be avoidable just by following the steps that doctors often neglect. Though doctors go through years of intense training, over time they become complacent about themselves and behave as if they know everything.

Putting aside all of these, what can we possibly do to avoid deaths and improve the efficiency of surgeries?

It is by the following checklist. Sounds simple, right? But what if I say these simple checklists improved communication among members while performing surgery and reduced life-costing errors? The checklist serves as a list of tasks that need to be performed before, during, and after surgery. These checklists have tasks that are of utmost importance and shouldn’t be neglected.

What I really liked about this book is, though the concept is too simple, the author draws several examples from the aviation and construction industries to convey his point (why checklists are important). I felt I was reading a fiction book. But if you are a person who wants authors to get to the point right away, this book is not for you. If you feel bored and like to drop it.

Overall, it’s a nice book that doesn’t have heavy information but gives enough on the topic of why checklists are important.
