The biggest barrier to listening, putting aside the internal monologue, is not being interested in knowing a person. Most people want to tell their story, but they cannot find the listeners. It might sound cliche, but the world would have been a much better place if we could listen to each other wholeheartedly without any prejudice or presuppositions.
We have our deeply held beliefs that we expect and act like no one should question or offend. But if we listen, we get a new perspective or understanding of life. We not only curse the person who offended us, but we also try hard to prove he/she is wrong. Instead of doing that, we can be open and understand the weight of their perspective.
Listening is a skill that we all need to improve. It will reduce misunderstandings, improve conversations, and enrich our relationships. Most people think listening is a one-sided act, but it goes both ways. Unless we engage and actively make efforts to explore what’s running in people’s minds, we never can improve the skill.
You’re Not Listening is one of my favorite books. I read the book last year as an ebook edition. I wanted to have a physical copy. This is a partial review of the book. If you are all interested, we can have a deep discussion about it. I highly recommend this book.
