Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? by Dr. Julie Smith

Review 1—Reviewed Date: September 14th, 2022

I have been experiencing a low mood for almost 3 weeks. Although I am aware of why I am feeling that, I couldn’t come out of it. I feel urges to do everything or do nothing and lie on my bed for half of my day. Also, along with low mood, I have been anxious too, a deadly combination.

I didn’t pick this book to get out of my slump. I happened to purchase it after seeing the book in my feed. To tell the truth, I have made the right purchase. Not only did the contents make me aware of the situation I am in, but they were also comforting. The author wrote in a way that while reading, you feel you are in therapy.

One thing I liked in the book is the author doesn’t go paragraph after paragraph writing what you should do. Instead, she lays down the questions to figure out yourself: what are you feeling, why are you feeling it, and what can you do? It’s not to say the author doesn’t cover psychology; she does brilliantly with analogies.

I am yet to finish this book. To be precise, I am reading only what is useful considering the situation I am in. I review the full book once I complete it. But I recommended this to everyone. In fact, I purchased another copy of the book to gift to someone. Probably you got the idea of how much I love this book.

On the previous post of this book, someone commented something like, ‘don’t we know all this information?’ Of course, we do. We all know how to repair our relationships, what to do in stressful situations, and what changes we need to bring into our lives, but the question is, are we doing these? Or are we putting our knowledge to use, to action?

The thing is, when we are going through rough shit, despite knowing what to do, we are paralyzed to take effective action. We feel, especially during our low moments, the need for someone to be on our side and listen to our thoughts and feelings. Most people don’t open up and confine what’s going on, thanks to taboos related to mental health in our society.

For those who have a habit of reading, books like these are helpful. At least they feel they are not alone in this. Contrary to self-help books out there, this book has a lot of practical stuff, and I personally found some concepts useful as I began to implement them right away.

There is something I need to mention here. This book is written for beginners; there isn’t much technical jargon, some concepts are simplified, and some concepts lack serious depth. If you have read some books and are looking for a book that covers in-depth mental health, this probably isn’t for you.

It would be an understatement if I said I had a good time with this book. I read this book in the right of my life as I was sailing through a turbulent sea. I should also mention, this book will surely come in handy in the coming days, as I am foreseeing turbulent times.

One thing I like about this is the author is not trying to force us to follow this or that remedy. Instead, she presents questions and insights that help us figure out things for ourselves by depending on others less. It’s self-therapy.

As I mentioned in a previous review of the book, it doesn’t go in-depth with mental states but gives you enough for comprehension. I think that is sufficient. I recommend this to everyone. I already have a paperback for my close friend. This is all I can say about the book; I think I convinced you by now.
