In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Mate

The way we treat addicts is surprising. We call them lazy, irresponsible, and aimless people who just want to get high. But there is something we all have been missing. Most people don’t get addicted for the sake of pleasure; they are trying to escape reality. To be precise, they are trying to numb their suffering.

It is easy to say, ‘why can’t just quit when you know it’s harmful?’ We cannot provide assistance and support, but we are just treating the symptoms. Addiction should be treated at root levels. We need to ask why they became addicts in the first place. Have they been through traumatic episodes? What’s that they are lacking in their life?’

While reading the book, I couldn’t help but think of my late alcoholic father. I loathe him to the core. It was his addiction that ruined my family. But now I understand the powerlessness and lack of control he must have felt after marriage because of his mother (my granny) that paved the path to addiction.

I only read 100 pages of the book. It’s so awesome, and I can’t wait to finish it. Gabor Mate has become my favorite author. I like his writing style. I recommend this to everyone. I think everyone needs to understand addiction and its causes. It will surely come in help.
