It is only through exposing ourselves to reality, facing consequences, and getting scars that we obtain knowledge that cannot be taken. Though we may lose intensity as years pass, knowledge stays still. But in modern times, we are far from knowing the consequences of our actions; we have become sophisticated.
Skin in the Game is an incredible and unusual read. Nassim Taleb is my favorite author, and I admire his ruthlessness. I read this book 2 years ago, and still, I remember much of it only because of the difficulty I had while reading the book.
Nassim Taleb says the minority rules the world. In other words, people who take risks and experience reality firsthand propel civilization forward through innovations and creations. While the rest simply follow.
He also says that bureaucracy has brought no consequences for their actions. Employees of the bureaucracy building don’t have an idea of how things work outside; they just follow the orders of a person who is valued by perception. To put it simply, bureaucracy brings complications.
And, lastly, one of my favorite lines: he says, “Don’t take advice from a person who lives by advising others unless there is a penalty for his advice if they go wrong.” It’s you who has to pay the prices for consequences, not charlatans.
I highly recommend this book; though it is a difficult read, you learn a lot from it. Must say be patient with Nassim Taleb. b. He doesn’t get to the point right away.
