The internet has opened gates of opportunities and rooms for showcasing our talents and interacting with people like never before in the history of humankind, but with all these came deception and lies in the form of influencers, people who have an audience for their content. These influencers sell off bad products to their followers for monetary benefits.
The rise of social media made us believe that attaining success is an easy thing and all you need to do is work hard. As we see slices of successful people’s lives, we become desperate to reach their position. Our desperation gives rise to charlatans (Jay Shetty, Tai Lopez, and Dan Lok).
Charlatans make promises. If we take their courses or read their books, we would become enlightened, and we would get to know the secrets of riches. Young people are easy targets of these charlatans. They prey on young people’s naivety and desperation. Sooner or later, they realize they had been scammed.
Scams and frauds are common on social media. Pseudo meme accounts repost viral videos, and with videos come brand product links. It is similar to tweeting about Black Lives Matter and adding the email ID of PayPal. People who watch these videos think products are genuine and order them, only to find out that they were scammed.
That’s not it. For the last 6 years, we have been seeing accounts of women who got breast and butt implants (BBL) sharing their semi-nude pictures for attracting people. As popularity grows, these women provide OnlyFans links to turn the following into a money-generating machine. But attention and monetary aspects lead many women to get implantations that could be risky.
I must say some bookstagrammers push regular or bad self-help books as life-changing ones just because they got paid. Sadly, people who think a recommendation is genuine may get disappointed.
