I should have read this book before reading Courage to Be Disliked. This is more cohesive and has thought-provoking aspects. But as much as I liked reading this book, there are certain concepts I don’t agree with and felt were outdated. For example, deny trauma.

It could be helpful when we say ‘This phase will be over; have strength’ to someone who lost a loved one. But how can someone say, ‘Trauma doesn’t exist; you are making it up’? It’s like belittling what a person is going through. Also, some traumatic events change the neurological structure of the brain, leaving a permanent scar.

I agree that one shouldn’t live his/her life thinking about what happened in the past. Whatever happens to us, by accepting the painful and traumatic incidents in our lives and by improving ourselves a little every day, we could accomplish something worthwhile. Denying trauma as if it doesn’t exist may sound good, but it would rise to the surface soon.

Another concept I liked, though it’s not the first time I am hearing about it, is who you are. Living up to the expectations of society, you fail to be happy. Do what you love to do even if it’s not enjoyable all the time.

Even though I don’t agree with its content fully, I still recommend this book. You will have a good time with thought exercises.
