We often get doubts about who we are, what we are doing here, and what makes us unique. For questions like these, there are no easy answers. Several branches of science offer their answers. Though some are concrete and plausible, while others give rise to more doubts.

Being You is an incredible book on understanding consciousness. It is one of a few books that you feel you are going to have a great time with after reading the introduction itself. Before starting the book, I thought it would be a difficult read, but it turned out to be a very enjoyable and interesting read.

It is still a question of whether animals have consciousness like humans. But importantly, we need to ask, what is consciousness in the first place, and what makes you you? Throughout history, religions and philosophers set out to answer these questions. However, the author put forth his definition of consciousness.

It is a subjective experience of any kind, and the author took the approach of phenomenology to explain the consciousness. While it is interesting to search for what constitutes consciousness, it could be fruitless, as machine parts don’t reveal much about what a machine does.

I highly recommend this book if you are interested in reading about the brain, mind, and, of course, consciousness. My review doesn’t do justice to the contents of the book. Overall, it is an engaging and interesting read.
