Many of us grew up watching Pixar movies. They are beautifully animated and visually appealing, and the characters have depth. I loved Finding Nemo. I watched it every time it was telecasted.
Why are Pixar movies emotionally touching and also blockbuster successes? It isn’t only attention to details; many things go into the process of making a film.
First of all, at Pixar, responsibility and ownership are given to people who are involved in the creation process. They have freedom to call out problems and can openly offer suggestions.
Right from the beginning, Pixar would look for hiring the right people who can complement each other in a team. The company believed that hiring the right people and getting the right chemistry is more important than developing great ideas.
For finding flaws and errors in a great idea, Pixar has a healthy feedback system. Notes will be passed on after every meeting. Notes contain what is wrong, what is missing, what isn’t clear, and what makes no sense. They call it BrainTrust.
And every person who attended gives opinions with absolute candor. But candor is valuable if the person on the receiving end is open to it. Otherwise, it would be a waste of time.
Finally, Ed Catmull says, “To ensure quality, then, excellence must be an earned word, attributed by others to us, not proclaimed by us about ourselves.”
