Probably one of the few books that lives up to its hype.
In our modern times, with so many things that constantly demand our attention, it has become difficult to focus deeply on important works. We are continually bombarded by distractions of many sorts, e-mails, Insta messages, etc. This would result in unproductive work.
Also, to survive in this world, we need to learn new skills. Skills that require our concentration and focus. With distractions and multitasking, we wouldn’t learn a thing but also waste our precious time in the process. To acquire skills, we need to allot time and focus on learning deeply.
That’s where Deep Work comes into the picture. Deep work can be defined as a state of distraction-free concentration that pushes your cognitive capabilities to their limit. It is no doubt that Deep Work brings value to our work. Like with any other skill, Deep Work needs to be learned.
Schedule your day before. Put a specific time for your work, say 4 hours. In that time, make sure to keep away the phone and other distractions. You must work, writing or reading, without getting involved in another work. If you can’t focus, take a break, but don’t pick up your phone. Do productive meditation in the break that might help you keep the concentration on the work.
And, lastly, to master a skill, you need to do deliberate practice where you focus deeply. It needs your undivided attention.
