Essentialism by Greg McKeown

We try to do everything as if we are super beings. But we forget the simple fact that saying yes to everything comes at a cost. Our energies are limited, and so is our time. Committing to everything only results in less valuable work, and we contribute to the world absolutely nothing.

Rather than surrendering to the notion that we should be multitasking and have more food on our plate, we have to figure out what is truly essential and worth our time spending. When we find out essential activities from a myriad of things, we can channel our energy towards them and create some valuable works.

Of all things, it is important to evaluate options in our hands. It is only through evaluation that we get to know what is essential. The essentialist is someone who chooses what he/she wants to spend time and energy on rather than letting others decide for them.

We should not leave non-essential things as they are; we have to eliminate them to get a smoother path. Though eliminating makes you feel you are losing something, it is best to employ an attitude that you are on to something essential and valuable. Nothing is more satisfactory than doing work that is meaningful and provides tons of value to your life.

Lastly, the essence of an essentialist is that he/she makes the choices. He/she doesn’t take more than he/she can eat.

“Only once you give yourself permission to stop trying to do it all, to stop saying yes to everyone, you can make your highest contribution towards the things that really matter.”
