Some parents and relatives can be toxic. It’s hard to accept, but that’s the truth. As family is a cultural system, children aren’t allowed to speak out when they notice unhealthy patterns. If they do, they will be labelled as selfish and almost immediately disapproved. It’s very difficult to stay when you are aware of dysfunctions.

I am not against parents. Parents do whatever they can to raise their children. But we shouldn’t rule out the fact that they are humans too. They can be traumatized, and unconsciously they can transfer it to their children. If they continue to engage in unhealthy behaviors even after bringing things to light, you have to maintain distance.

You can still appreciate and be grateful towards your parents or relatives and can also point out when they are crossing the limits. Understand that you didn’t choose relatives; when you were born, they came as default. You shouldn’t be concerned when it is time to choose yourself and ditch them.

Drama Free is an instant favorite read for me. I love this book. It’s very practical and written effectively. After every chapter, you will have journal prompts to exercise. There is no technical jargon. Everyone can read it. If you have immature parents or toxic relatives, you should read this book.
