Breath By James Nestor

Modern humans are the worst breathers on this planet. Although there are several reasons why we do that, we will explore them in a minute; breathing wrongly is affecting our body. But the main problem is with mouth breathing. Many take in air unconsciously; now it is time to change that.

Before addressing the harmful effects of mouth breathing, we need to understand why we are breathing through the mouth in the first place. There are two reasons: eating soft food and not being breastfed while growing up.

Our jaw muscles need to be exercised to grow our mouth wider, but consuming soft food and bottle feeding impedes the process. Thus making the roof of the mouth rise into the cavity of the nose, further blocking the airflow. Since we need air to live, we breathe through our mouths.

Now, getting into the interesting aspect of the book. Although breathing is vital to our survival, we need to inhale and exhale properly, but saying breathing can cure almost all diseases is an outrageous claim. It doesn’t stop there; the majority of the second part of the book is filled with pseudoscientific information and speculations.

I think the author got carried away by the notion of telling the importance of breathing, but making bold claims with anecdotal evidence has left me with a mixed opinion about the book. There is hardly any science in the second part, as the tagline says.

I am not sure whether to recommend this book or not. It has some good info and pseudoscience. I will leave the decision to you guys.
