A Mind for Numbers by Barbara Oakley

I am terrible at math and failed so many times that I don’t even remember the count. When there was a math test, I would fixate on the fact that I am destined to fail. Looking at formulas and lengthy equations gave me nauseating feelings. I have decided that math is my enemy.

Looking back at those days, I should have attempted to learn. It was my limiting belief that stopped me from learning. It wasn’t that the math was hard; in my mind, I made it hard, thinking math is for academic toppers.

Unconsciously or consciously, we hold on to such beliefs that stop us from growing. It is worth mentioning that with constant effort and deliberate practice, we can be good at something even though our history says otherwise.

A Mind for Numbers is an incredible beginner book for getting at math and science. It is not limited to these two; you can apply them while learning skills and working on a project. My favorite techniques are Pomodoro and Chunking. I use them while reading.
