Because of modernity and the rise in technological advances, charlatans sprout up everywhere, advising things that they don’t have first-hand experiences with. They write books (mostly self-help), and they would preach this-should-be-done-to-be-happy things for people who got upset over minute setbacks. Though these books couldn’t be practically applicable but sound very intelligible, they make readers think their lives have changed after reading them.
These charlatans aren’t risk-takers; they don’t take risks if their advice goes wrong. Of the 100% population, only 3-4 percent are risk-takers. They propel civilization forward by inventions or by their work. Skin in the game implies getting exposed to the real world and facing consequences, whether they are good or bad. Why is it important?
To have a sense of the real world, we need to expose ourselves to reality- starting a business, writing a book, or having a career as a hedge fund trader. The reason is that what we learn from exposure is going to stay with us forever. Though intensity may be missed in the long run, whether successful or a total loser, this learning says we are human and up for getting scars of reality.
Speaking of 3-4 percent, they belong to minority rule. Let me explain this way: I have invited 100 bookstagrammers for my birthday party; out of 100, 10 members eat food that is halal. Not wanting to leave them out, I bring food that is halal. Knowingly or unknowingly, I serve this halal food to the rest of the members; they don’t seem to be concerned about it. According to the minority rule, the entire population will submit to the preferences of the minority (3-4 percent).
English manners could also serve the minority rule. When Britishers arrived in India, they classified Indians as people without manners. Because the majority of Indians would speak honestly and openly even if they could hurt other people. Brits had imposed manners as a way to domesticate Indians. As Nassim Taleb says, it is the most intolerant person who imposes virtue on others precisely because of that intolerance (Brits also brought colorism to India). They literally made us hate our own people. Thanks to them, the fairness industry thriving in India.
